An atheist has a God-shaped box in his heart, one of the great philosophers said. It is true, that every human being needs to have someone, who is a master and creates rules but also loves his children. Religion is a part of human nature. All societies during the ages had gods, shrines and places of cult.
The religions are now developed and institutionalised. Many people visit the holy places and mourn after the death of the Pope. But, for instance in France, the Churches are being closed. It is a matter of education that many people stop practising the religion. The human soul needs to believe in something supernatural. If it is not a God, people look for, as the Germans would say, an ersatz - something instead. It could be the New Age, Spiritism or other religion or mystic movement.
In many countries we can observe a kind of back to the roots. People come back to the traditional religions, like Islam or Christianity. It is good, but in Muslim countries some groups can make use of the emotional hunger for evil purposes.
I think that every religion is a matter of feelings not the rational thinking, but the modern societies become more and more educated and this fact result in the empty temples.
I think that the religions, despite all the obstacles, will exist to the end of the mankind.
